Information on religious affiliation for the total population is available from 1951 to 2001 in the form of self-declaration from the censuses. Since then, the official census has been replaced by the compilation of registers, and religious affiliation is no longer surveyed (see the Federal Law on register counting) (Registerzählungsgesetz), BGBI. I No. 33/2006, subsequently amended by BGBI. I No. 125/2009). In 2021, Statistics Austria conducted a voluntary survey on “Religious affiliation of the population in private households”, which, after estimating the religious affiliation of the total population, now supplements the time series since 1951. These most recent numbers show the following affiliations: 55,2% Catholic, 8,3% Islamic, 4,9% Christian Orthodox, 3,8% Protestant, 5,5% affiliated with other religious traditions (e.g. Buddhism, Judaism, other Christian Churches, etc.) and 22,4% not affiliated (See here).
