Spain’s Muslim community has approximately 375, 000 followers. Islam in Spain is made up of "naturalised Muslims" and immigrants. The "naturalised Muslims" or followers with Spanish citizenship are either people originating from predominantly Muslim countries, who now live in Spain and have acquired Spanish citizenship (Moroccans, Syrians, Jordanians, Iranians or Lebanese) or Spaniards who have converted to Islam. The increase, over the last decades, in immigration from countries which are predominantly of the Muslim religion (Morocco, Pakistan, Algeria, and Senegal) has brought about an increase in the number of followers on Spanish territory. Yet, the size of the Muslim community in Spain is not as numerically significant compared to the Muslim communities of other European countries.

Since the end of General Franco’s dictatorship, followed by the promulgation of the Ley de Libertad Religiosa, its numbers have constantly increased, seeing that their numbers jumped from 40, 000 in 1960 to 100, 000 in 1980, then to 200, 000 in 1990, finally reaching the figure mentioned above in 2000.
