General overview (according to the Census of 21 May 2011)

  • Area: 49,036 km2
  • Population: 5 397 036 (51,3% female)
  • Capital: Bratislava (413 192 inhabitants)
  • Largest cities and number of inhabitants: Košice (240 688), Prešov (91 638), Žilina (81 515), Banská Bystrica (79 775), Nitra (78 875), Trnava (66 219), Martin (57 300), Trenčín (55 832)
  • Majority national group : Slovaks (80,6 %)
  • Other ethnic groups : Hungarians (8,48%), Roma (1,97%), Czechs, Moravians et Silesians (0,62%), Ruthenes (0,61%), Ukrainians (0,13%)
  • Official language and other recognised languages: Slovak. If at least 20 per cent of town or village inhabitants come from national minority, the members of this minority can use their minority language as an official language there (e.g. German, Hungarian, Ukrainian, Ruthenian). Czech is also practiced from equal importance throughout the territory of the Slovak Republic.
  • Regions: 8 - Bratislava, Trnava, Nitra, Trenčín, Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Prešov, Košice; (79 districts, 138 towns, 2,883 villages)
  • Religious situation : the Constitution of the Slovak Republic guarantees all citizens the freedom to profess a religion. A number of churches and religious groups are recognized by the state (18 in 2011). The country has a vast majority of Roman Catholics, some other Christian minorities (Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession, Greek Catholic Church, Reformed Church - Calvinism) and over 13% of "no religion".
