General Overview

  • Land area: 56,594 km²
  • Surface area of territorial sea and interior sea waters: 31.067 km²
  • Population: 3,871,833 (Census 2021)
  • Capital: Zagreb (767,131 inhabitants, Census 2021)
  • Territorial division: 21 counties, 127 towns, 429 municipalities
  • Official language: Croatian
    Minority languages are in use in local governments, either where more than one third of the population belongs to a specific national minority or when such use is prescribed by the municipality/city statute or by international agreements, which include: the Czech, Hungarian, Italian, Ruthenian, Serbian and Slovakian language.
  • Main national group: Croats (91.63%)
  • Other ethnic groups: Serbs (3.20%), while all other ethnic groups account for less than1% (Bosniacs, Albanians, Roma, Italians, Slovenians, etc.)
  • Religious situation: according to the Croatian Constitution, all religions are equal and separated from the state. As Croats are predominantly Catholics, the Catholic Church is the most important religion and most visible in the public. According to the 2021 Census, there were 78.97% Catholics, 3.32% Orthodox, 1.32% Muslims, 0.26% Protestants, 4.71% atheists and non-believers, etc.
