Civil marriage

Only civil marriage is recognised by law. Under Article 4 of the Federal Law on Freedom of Conscience and Religious Associations, the statenever delegates exercising its duties to religious associations, even for vital records and, in particular, marriage. The religious ceremony is optional in law, but according to the rules of the Russian Orthodox Church itself (not included in the written norms of canon law), civil marriage must precede the religious ceremony.
